Several Steel Window Institute members also make doors out of the same steel window parts. Steel windows and doors have an unrivalled life cycle, as they are naturally more durable than nearly any other construction material. Steel windows and doors have a low total cost of ownership, which is a benefit. Original steel windows and doors can be found in classical architectural specimens over a century old in Europe. Steel windows in North America have remained very functional for three generations. In some circumstances, older steel windows are merely changed to take advantage of new glass, finishing, or ventilation technology. Steel windows and degradation are essentially mutually exclusive words when properly fitted and maintained.
